The Week of February 25, 2013

Dear Parents,

   It has been a pleasure to have many parents attend the students'  Unsolved Mystery presentations.
The students worked hard on every step of this project and their presentations show the end result of both independent and group work. Mrs. Foellmer helped instruct the students with the technology.  Ms. Hagansee, IMC Director at Lakeview, and Mrs. Csorba, IMC Director at Prairieview also gathered non fiction books for our research.
  Monday we have our final presentations!

THIS WEEK IN MISS TREFONAS'S CLASS:

SPELLING: Lesson 22 and word of the week

SCOOPer Reading : 3rd Trimester Goal due date is March 13th!  Mrs. Linde met with some Scooper Reading book talks this week! She enjoyed listening to the books students are reading. Mrs. Warkentien, our IMC assistant, meets with students in our class, and is an asset to recommending books! 

READING:  This week we are preparing for ISAT testing the week of March 4th!  

ENGLISH: Unit 3 Verbs - Direct Objects, Main & Helping Verbs, Linking Verbs

SOCIAL STUDIES:  Chapter 8 Lesson 3 Patriot/Loyalist - We will be completing this project.....proofreading and making the cover!  

SCIENCE:  Chapter 15 Lesson 2 FORMS OF ENERGY : Solar, Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Sound

MATH:  This week we will only have 3 days of math.  The focus will be on preparing for ISAT testing.

The Week of February 18, 2013

Dear Parents,

No School on Monday in observance of President's Day!

Wed. 2/20 - Mon. 2/25 Unsolved Mysteries Presentations! Parents are invited! Please see the schedule that was sent home.

Thurs. 2/21 Spring Picture Day

Earth Day Shirts are on sale and can be ordered until March 1st

THIS WEEK IN MISS TREFONAS'S CLASSROOM:

SPELLING:  Lesson 21 and word of the week

SCOOPer READING:  The 3rd Trimester goal due date is March 13th.

READING:  We presenting our Unsolved Mysteries and working on figurative language with a focus on idioms.  Figurative Language can really "drive you up the wall"!

SOCIAL STUDIES:  The American Revolution begins with "The Shot Heard Around the World"
The students will be note-taking which will be used to complete an enrichment activity.

SCIENCE:  Chapter 15 Lesson 1 Potential and Kinetic Energy and Solar Energy

MATH:  Inequalities is the last lesson in chapter 4
             Homework sheet = Wednesday
             Chapter 4 test = Thursday

The Week of February 11, 2013

Dear Parents,

Tuesday, 2/12 - Miss Trefonas is attending the Illinois Association of Gifted Children Conference and will not be in the classroom.  **
Please note this since many parents send me notes or messages to give to their child during the day.
Your child won't get the message on Tuesday!

Thursday, 2/14 - HAPPY VALENTINE's DAY
A big thank you to Mrs. Edwards for being the party coordinator and getting all the party moms organized for our classroom party.  Thank you to Mrs. Stanley, Mrs. Wagner, and Mrs. Mitchell for planning the games and activities!  Thank you to Mrs. Burrows and Mrs. Meier for sending in snacks.  Mrs. Khimani is sending in drinks!
Please encourage your child to have valentines to pass out!  This is their last year of doing a classroom valentine exchange!


THIS WEEK IN OUR CLASSROOM:

SPELLING:  Lesson 20 and word of the week

ENGLISH:  Proper Adjectives, Adjective Poems and Adjective "ABC" books!
Unit 4 Test = Friday

SCOOPer Reading:  Yes!!! Every student has at least one book read and activity completed!!!

READING:  We are finishing our Unsolved Mysteries Research Project! We will be going over presentation skills and practicing before the final share!
The slide show presentations are looking spectacular.  The students have been encouraged to read more about their "mystery" over the weekend so they can be an "expert" presenter.
I will be having each group share their Unsolved Mystery the week of Feb. 19th during the morning.
A schedule will be emailed next week and parents are invited!!!

SOCIAL STUDIES:  We will be writing about the Boston Massacre, The Boston Tea Party, and the Intolerable Acts as our next chapters in our PATRIOT - LOYALIST books.

We will also be enjoying some imported tea from the East India Tea Company and some English "wafers".
The colonists will be having a TEA PARTY!!!

SCIENCE: We are not starting chapter 15 until next week!

MATH:  Chapter 4 quiz Lessons 1-3 = Tuesday
                Homework sheet = Tuesday
                No math on Wednesday
                Valentine math activity = Thursday
                Lesson 4.6 Solving Algebra equations = Friday

The Week of February 4, 2013

Dear Parents,

    The Center Cass School District Spelling Bee is Tuesday, Feb. 5th at 10:00 in the Prairieview gym.
Parents are invited to attend.  Congratulations to Lukian who will be competing!

HERE'S WHAT WE ARE LEARNING:

SPELLING:  Lesson 19 and word of the week

ENGLISH:  Adjectives - The students will be given enrichment work with each lesson.

SCOOPer READING:  Each child should have a book read and activity completed by the end of the week in order to keep on track with their third quarter goal!

READING: We are finishing our research for Unsolved Mysteries and completing our Power Point presentations.  

SOCIAL STUDIES:  The Boston Tea Party

SCIENCE:  Chapter 14 Test  = Friday
Students have notesheets, graded work, and vocabulary "memory game" cards" to study, and of cours....the textbook!

MATH:  Chapter 4 Algebra Expressions and Equations
